The company’s engineers identify the degree of general and local wear using ultrasonic thickness measurement, which most accurately determines the thickness of the measured object.
The results of measurements are compared with compliance with standard values. Next, we draw up a report with recommendations for the repair or replacement of worn and damaged structures.
SpecMorService is recognized by the RUSSIAN MARITIME REGISTER OF SHIPPING, RUSSIAN RIVER REGISTER OF SHIPPING, Nippon Kaiji Kiokay, BUREAU VERITAS, RINA Services S.p.A as a provider of services for the ship repair, flaw detection and survey of ship hulls and ship equipment.
Ultrasonic thickness measurement is the most accurate and widespread method for assessing the technical condition of metal structures. It is used to measure the residual thickness of an object and assess its acceptability for further operation.
The advantages of this method are the ability to control the thickness of an object with access only from one side, high productivity and measurement accuracy over the entire width of various thicknesses, control of metallic and non-metallic materials, including through paint.
This method is indispensable in assessing the condition of ship hulls, marine and enclosing structures.
Ultrasonic thickness measurement
Principle
The unit sends a strong electrical signal to the probe, causing it to emit a high energy pulse of ultrasound. The transmitted ultrasound pulse travels through both the coating and the metal and reflects from the back wall. The reflected sound waves then reverberates within the metal, with only a small portion of the echo travelling back through the coating each time.
The timing between the small echoes gives the timing of the echoes within the metal, which relate to the metal thickness. The returned echoes need not be consecutive as the thickness gauge will interpret them automatically and calculate the thickness.
Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge Operating Principle
SPECIFICS
During control, measurement errors may occur due to non-parallelism of object surfaces, high roughness of internal and external surfaces in cases of inhomogeneous structure of the metal case of products, discontinuities or other metallurgical defects. Therefore, for measurement accuracy, the surface is prepared and control points are selected.
