Ship Boiler Inspection
During the operation of marine boilers, corrosion and erosion damage, steaming and leaks, cracks and ruptures of elements, as well as residual deformations appear.

Corrosion destruction of marine boilers is observed both from the side of the water, steam and furnace space, and from the outside of the boilers. Corrosion of the internal surfaces of boilers is caused by organic and inorganic impurities contained in water. Elements of the fire space are also destroyed by chemical corrosion under the influence of sulfur dioxide gases formed during the combustion of fuel.

From the outside, the walls of the boilers are corroded as a result of exposure to moist air and carbon dioxide, especially in the lower part of the bodies of fire-tube boilers and water collectors of water-tube boilers.

Erosive destruction of boilers from the inside arise from the impact of steam and water particles, in the furnace space from gases and ash.

We prepare a safe and comfortable place for work, check the lifting equipment fixed in the boiler room, install normal and emergency lighting, parts and assemblies for the installation of ladders, racks and scaffolding. Determine and agree on a work schedule.

We disarm the boiler: disconnect the steam and water pipelines, disconnect the fasteners, remove the fittings. We clean the boiler from sludge, dirt, rust, soot, dust and water.

We carry out inspection and measurements of flame tubes, subsidence, local bulges, narrowing of seam and seamless structures, residual deformations of hot water and fire tubes are detected.

Using ultrasonic devices, we measure residual thicknesses, determine the depth of dents and the degree of wear of the boiler elements. Engineers compare the obtained indicators with the normative ones, determine the technical condition of the boiler and make a decision on repair.

Pre-repair measurements of residual thicknesses help determine in advance the amount of work to eliminate wear and predict the amount of metal that will be needed for repairs. This reduces the time the vessel is in the dock and saves the customer’s money.

Based on the results of the flaw detection, we generate documentation:
  • Tables of measurements, on the basis of which the technical condition of the boiler is determined
  • Technological instructions and repair scheme
  • Fault finding report is a consolidated document signed by the commission that examined the boiler and the Register employee


An external survey of boilers, including tests of safety and protective devices, as well as tests of safety valves with their unloading device, shall be carried out annually within the terms of the annual survey of the ship. For exhaust gas-heated economizers, safety valves shall be tested by the chief engineer at sea within the limits of the annual survey. This test must be recorded in the log book and checked by the inspector present before the annual survey is credited.

If the ship’s boiler fails, further operation of the ship is impossible.
